Who doesn’t love a winter wedding! Especially when it is at Leftbank Leeds, most likely the coolest venue up North and a dream come true for any fine art wedding photographer.
It’s set in a former church/cathedral and what I really like about this venue is that it’s a huge, uncluttered space, the architecture is unique, the light is interesting (there’s only one row of big church windows high up) and it’s a completely blank canvas for couples to play with.
Ellie and Ben kept decorations to a minimum and allowed the space to really shine. Their ceremony took place at the raised altar where they said ‘I do’ surrounded by their loved ones. Oh, that’s another thing I like about Leftbank Leeds: they allow indoors confetti! Ellie and Ben provided plenty of it and seeing them disappear in a mega cloud of paper bits was pretty hilarious.
Drinks and dinner took place in the centre under a canopy of festoon lights (the bright kind, hooray!) and ribbon bunting. 12m and 1200 strips of pastel coloured ribbon! Ellie probably broke some kind of record there! I like to sew but I would have not dared to attempt this project and I have heard through the grapevine that it took Ellie a few weeks of solid work to complete the task. Ellie’s sister made not one but two super pretty wedding cakes and Ben revealed that he’d been up until 2 AM on the night before the wedding stewing apples for the dessert for 120 guests. That’s a lot of apples! And a lot of dedication!
I seem to be shooting more and more DIY weddings these days and I love photographing them just as much as the high end productions I shoot the other half of the time. There’s something really special about the relaxed vibe of a DIY wedding and I love it when couples make their own traditions. Bring on the humanist ceremonies, the indoor confetti and the best woman speeches! I dig them all!
It was such a pleasure to meet Ellie and Ben (who is a fellow photographer, so the pressure was definitely on!) and to be part of their wonderful day. Thanks for having me, guys!
